Author Richard Mayers visits Townsend

Local author Richard Mayers visited Townsend on Wednesday to deliver a creative workshop to some students in years 7 and 8 who have been working particularly well in English this term.

Students were introduced to Richard's two books, Spikez and Making Trakz, written about cyborgs made from animals, and had a presentation/discussion about animal testing and rights of animals.  They were then asked to create their own cyborgs, with designs being presented at the end of the session.

Students thoroughly enjoyed creating their own concepts and designs throughout the afternoon and we thank Richard for his time visiting us!

D of E good news!

GOOD NEWS
The DofE leaders would like to share some good news. We have recently received our annual statistics reports from Hertfordshire County Council. Townsend has achieved a completion rate of 70%, the completion rate for Hertfordshire is 48%. This puts us 2nd place out of the other 21 local authority schools and 16th out of the 92 centres Countywide for completed awards. This was only possible because of the hard work of our DofE leaders, commitment of our students and of course our supportive parents. Well done everyone!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

Fire Skills course
14 DofE participants have been taking part in a Fire Skills course at St Albans Fire Station which will complete their skills section of the award. The course has been great fun and all our students have enjoyed learning new skills such as hose running, rescuing bodies from a smoking building and using breathing apparatus, as well as using some very high ladders!

WORSHIP AT TOWNSEND

Our value focus for June is Unity
Unity is about being together in a common purpose. We are united in educating all children for life through inspirational, focused teaching. Unity is about being focused on a goal, or even on a person. We will learn about unity through living the values as we share a common purpose every single month. This is particularly important within a school community and wider society where we need to come together to achieve our aims.

Explore your ImagiNation!

Hertfordshire Libraries are inviting 11-18 year olds to take part in ImagiNation 2016, a free reading and arts project. The aim of ImagiNation is to enjoy reading over the summer and then get creative! Young people have been involved in all stages of the development of this project. They invented the name, developed the log, designed a blog and planned activities. Anyone aged 11-18 can join in, they just need to collect a free log book from their local library. Then choose two library books or eBooks to read and then respond in a creative way. The log offers a choice of activities designed to get the imagination flowing, from comic strips and poems to movie trailers and dance. Participants can share their art and ideas online at: imaginationeast.org.uk/ Young people who complete their log book and return it to their library will receive a certificate and a collectable lanyard. ImagiNation will run from 16 July - 10 September 2016.
