Year 9 career enrichment day

Tomorrow (Tuesday 1st July) Year 9 will begin three days of career enrichment, including lots of valuable information and educational activities to take part in.

The day will start with a year assembly, followed by special speakers visiting the students to discuss qualifications and grades required for different careers within their own industries.  Students will then carry out Visual Audio Kinaesthetic self-assessments to see what type of learner they are – visual, audio etc.

Parents are then invited in to school in the evening at 7:00pm to see a program on the transition to GCSEs and how to support their child.  We will also share how to use the Show my Homework website, along with other valuable information.

More updates on the day to follow.

Live-N-Learn at Townsend

Today “Live-N-Learn” visited Townsend to run a day’s workshop for the year 1 students who are coming back to Townsend to study for their A Level qualifictations as part of our sixth form.  Live-N-Learn are a franchise who travel the country delivering workshops to students based on study and training skills.  They visited Townsend today to introduce Year 11 to the next stage of their education, increasing their thinking skills and creativity.  One of the final activities of the day was to “make a creation out of the pieces provided”!!  Mr Parker was present throughout the day and explained that it had been a fun yet valuable day of skills awareness and helping students think about the next stage of school.

For the final day of National Schools Sports week celebrations, the PE department hosted a game of mini golf, at lunchtime opening out an exclusive inland Links course on the field.  During the afternoon, as part of their Sports Leaders award, Year 10 students carried out a Sports Festival.  Students from local primary school Margaret Wix were invited in to Townsend, where they carried out a carousel of sports activities devised by the Year 10 students themselves.  The primary students were split into small groups, each working their way round each of the activities.  A lot of fun was had, as well as practical advice and skills provided from the Year 10 Townsend sports leaders.  Well done all who took part!

In Hindsight band visiting Townsend

Townsend C of E School hosted the up and coming band ' In Hindsight' today for a small gig in the Discovery Centre.  Year 8 students were treated to a private gig with a Q and A session, followed by a lunchtime performance for the whole school.  The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed their music and interaction with the students they performed to. They were asked to perform because they deliver a strong anti-drink and drugs message for young people. Having worked in the industry for a while they have had experiences of seeing the pitfalls of how substance misuse affects people and they were able to communicate this to the students in a positive way. As lead for PSHE/LFL in school, Miss Dan explained "This was a powerful and alternative way of educating our pupils about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and it really worked!  The Question and Answer session was well received, as well as the music of course!"
